Lockdown Task 1: Rocket Project

Today the kea team planned out an activity to keep us occupied during lockdown. That activity was to draw or make a rocket. I drew a rocket because I found it quite challenging to find the materials to make one. I found it easy to draw all of the feature to my drawing and I found it challenging to color it becuase it took time.

I added my own twist to my rocket so it looked different. I drew the rocket with a BTS logo because I am obsessed BTS. And I also drew half the earth to show the rocket escaping the earths gravitational pull. The fins on my rocket help the aerodynamics accelerate . Accelerate means to make it move quickly and/or faster. And aerodynamics is the force of which an object can interact with the air with a solid body. This with make my rocket move more faster escaping earths gravitational pull.

Wesley Intermediate School Trip.

On Tuesday, All the year 6´s from the Kea team walked to Wesley Intermediate. It wasn't that long of a walk to get to the Intermediate. We entered the gate of Wesley Intermediate and met the vice-principal, Mr Taufia ( sorry for wrong spelling ). He introduced himself and asked us some questions before we went inside.

Once we went inside we were all amazed at how different and unique the intermediate was. We walked passed some hallways and into the Gym/Hall. Then we went outside and Mr. Taufia gave us a tour. He first showed us where the Woodwork class was. We all went inside and observed all the different tools.

Then we went into the little hallways and entered the next room; the music room. In that room was a bunch of musical Instruments some even used in orchestras! There were ukuleles, Guitars, Keyboards, and Drums. Then Mr. Taufia said that they were the only school in New Zealand that had a Caribbean Drum group.

Then we went outside and saw where we could spend our Morning tea and Lunch playtime. We were not allowed to go where the Wesley intermediate students were. Soon, we went into the Hall and saw May Road Primary. We sat down in our colour groups - Red, Pink, Green, Black, Blue. I was in the Black group with Ashley, Mele, Doris, Haydara, Joseph, and Rakaii.

Then we saw some Wesley Intermediate students sitting on benches near May Road. Then we met the Principal and our leaders. Our leaders were the ones who would take us to our assigned classes. Our leader was Bella and Gammado. Our first-class was robotics. We met Mrs. Mundy and some more helpers. We used Scratch to code our spheros.  Spheros are some sort of round ball controlled by a coding app. After we finished we went back to the hall to have morning tea. Then we went outside to play. After we went back to go to our next class - cooking.

We went to cooking and got the instructions. Our teacher said we were going to make brownies. Then she took us through of all the different recipes and pastries we could make when we went here next year. We went to a station with a helper from the intermediate. We started following the instructions while our helpers heated the baking trays. We ended up pouring the batter into the tray and put it in the oven for 20-25 minutes.

Then for lunch, we went to the hall and ate our brownies and lunch from school. And again we went outside to spend playtime. Then Bella and Gammado took us to our final class- art. We met Mrs. Sialoa. She taught us how to use oil pastels and blend in colours. We had to try and blend different colours and make shades. After we each got a piece of black paper and drew lines and colored it in with our oil pastels. We blended in it from darkest to lightest.

Then we all went back to the hall to receive our certificates. Then we all said goodbye to May Road and left. So to end, this was Kea´s Wesley intermediate experience.

Keas Gravitational Force Experiment.

Have you ever tried a gravitational force experiment? Try taking an empty and a full bottle and dropping them both on the ground at the same time and height. Notice Anything? What happened was a gravitational pull. The full bottle fell down first right? Force is what happens when an object with a greater mass than the other falls first. This also happens when the mass of an object affects the gravitational pull.

Isaac Newton,  a former scientist is one of the many scientist who had a theory of how gravity was formed. The story or myth of how this happened was , when Newton was sitting under a tree an apple fell on his head. At first glance he thought the sky was collapsing on him. Eventually he had another theory of how gravity was formed but that´s not concluded yet.

Soon more and more scientist started to form more theories of how gravity was formed. The most common theory is that gravity keeps the things on the earth from floating into outer space. There is no gravity in space, that´s why planets float around and orbit our solar system.

Then, a conclusion was formed. Why scientist are researching further on why there is no gravity in space. Referring back to experiment I mentioned at the beginning. Kea did the exact same experiment on Monday. They tried it with different objects, dropped them at different heights, and dropped them at different times.

The surface force, mass, and matter affected how the objects dropped and landed. In other words the one with more mass and matter fell first. So to conclude that´s how a gravitational force affected how an object landed.

Kea´s Exceptional Science Fair

Have you ever had a science fair in your school? Well a few days before the last day before term 2 ended, Kea had a science fair in the hall. There were different groups doing different landforms or natural disasters  such as Erosion, Glaciers, Volcanoes, etc. Kea made a variety of board based on their theme.

My theme was Erosion. I was in a group with Keasi, Leonzay, and Simon. We made a board with all our research, Variables, Ingredients, Equipment, and Changes. We  completed a science fair plan so we could plan out what we were doing and investigate further on what we were researching.

A few weeks after we conducted an experiment. Our experiment was to see which liquid would cause the most erosions. Our liquids were vinegar, water, and bleach. Our hypothesis was that the bleach would cause the most erosion becuase it was high in ph. But surprisingly it was water! My group was so shocked about the turn of events.

Then sooner after we had to set up and find out what roles each member of the group would play. The roles were 2 scientist, 1 greeter, 1 questioner, and 2 explainers. My role was scientist and explainer.

Then we set up for the hall by putting our board on our assigned table. Then we got the ingredients used for the experiment we were doing.

Sooner we all went to the hall and got ready for the whole school to come and see our science fair boards and experiments.

To conclude that the end of my science fair experiment. It was fun working in our group and going out of comfort zone to try new things.

Kea's Breaking News

Today Kea had  awesome Experiment! Kea was so Excited to do this challenge. We had to make a newspaper article on the tornado that hit South Aukland in Papatoetoe. What I found easy was finding inspiration articles and what I found hard was putting all my information together.

Tsunami Experiment.

Have you ever wondered what it’s like to witness/ experience a tsunami? When kea got the chance to make this epic D.I.Y tsunami, we split into groups of 4-5. Kea made a D.I.Y tsunami with a large tray, Sand, Bark, and other optional decorations. First we filled the tray with sand and sooner the bark and rocks. Secondly, me and Sulia made paper houses to demonstrate how the tsunami would affect the buildings and towns. We made a total of 2 houses and put one of the houses on a higher ground, whilst the other one was on a lower ground.

Our bioshield was made of bark and of small rocks.

Me and Sefa were assigned to make a google drawing of all the things we did and are doing. We did this to see how the waves would affect both houses. Then we went out and got some leaves, more bark, and some more sand and shells. After, we went to demonstrate our tsunami dioramas to the class we were in.

Foki and Talitas group was first to demonstrate. Whaea ocea went and got a small clipboard to make the tsunami waves. She pushed the board back and forth until the wave got more force and pushed itself toward the structures. Water splashed out of the tray as we continued to create more pressure on the waves. She did the same to all the groups. There were only 3 groups inside the class I was in.

Then we all got back to the Fale and shared what we did, how we did it, and why it was fun. And that's the end of my tsunami experience.

Kea's Volcano Experiment.

Have you ever done a volcano experiment? Well on 21st of May, Kea had so much fun with their D.I.Y volcanoes. We got split into groups of approximately 6-5 people. Then we got a clipboard with instructions on how to make and construct our own volcanoes out of sand. We had to fill out an instructional form of all the ingredients, methods, and different ways to make a volcano. Once we were done we had to go outside and get assigned into a station.and start building.

Ingredients: Equipment:

  1. Vinegar 1. Small cup

  2. Dish soap/liquid. 2. Measuring spoons

  3. Baking soda. 3. Container( to bring water in)

  4. Food coloring 4. Measuring cup/s.

Here are the instructions of how we made a volcano:

  1. Mold a volcano out of sand ( you might need some water to make it stand or hold its shape)

  2. Once you have constructed your volcano you need to find a small cup and pour about 1 cup of vinegar into your solution. Then wait for a bit and add the next ingredient.

  3. Then you need to add 2 tablespoons of baking soda into the solution.

  4. Add in the dishwashing liquid and any food coloring of your choice.

  5. Then you will slowly watch it explode. Some sides are lumpy, and some are smooth. The ooze will most likely go down the smooth side of the volcano.
